Simple. Yes, I think I'd go with simple.
We've all chased some sort of prestgious title or claim to fame in our years, I am sure. Oh and it starts early for some. Now I am not saying I didn't or don't have dreams or grand ideas. I do. We all do. I just think my lesson lately has been on simplicity. Being content and realizing that some of life's best are simple.
I've been thinking about some of the people whom have had the biggest influence on my life. And guess what? They aren't famous or mega rich and some never even had a job! But they are held pretty high in my book.
The first one was a very old lady who use to call me "Sunshine". She was the sweetest lady ever! When I walked to school I would pass her house and she always spoke so nice to me. Another was that very lady's daughter who lived just a couple houses down from us. Yes, most of the ones I've thought of lately were homemakers and to me as a little child they seemed very old...I know now that yes, my Lady Sunshine was old but her daughter not as much as I thought. Both passed away when I was still fairly young. And though I knew them for such a short while their impact still lives on.
I count myself rather lucky to have grown up in Sopchoppy where many families had known one another for ages. Meaning there wasn't much lee way in getting in trouble. You were always caught by someone. I also had the priveledge to see how honey was collected and got my fair share of honeycomb to chew. So many of the people I was raised around knew so many things about wildlife, how to make things and fix them.
In today's world, we just replace everything. Yes, everything. I think the ol' timers had the right idea. They lived simply. They repaired what was broken and that included friendships. They bought only what they needed and took care of what they had. They were happy. We chase and chase all the titles, money and trophies but are we really happy?
Over the last few weeks, I've seen such a change in my own home now that so much stuff is gone and we take the time out daily to do the things I had been taught to do. We have so much more fun and things are slowly falling into place around here. I actually repaired a pair of shorts and found great accomplishment in that simple task. Yep, I said it. It won't make me famous nor will I hold the title of seamstress anytime soon but it made me happy. Simple. Very simple and it brought great joy. I think it's time some of the rest of us got back to that ideal. It's rather a simple one. Should be easy enough to follow.
By the way, Sopchoppy's motto "Sopchoppy and Easy Living, go together."
Another fabulous post, Misty. It's good to be reminded of what's most important in life!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the simple thing!! We're trying to tone it down here, too. Spending less, acquiring less, taking our time. And I know the feeling of accomplishment by making something work... it's a natural high, really. Good for you mending the shorts- you're correct, we do throw out and re-buy way too much. Great post, Sopchoppy!!
