Best laid plans...

If you remember back in June, we had gone full force into our wonderful summer plans. Recitals went well and baseball camp was awesome! We played in the creek, found some shark's teeth and got all packed up for our month down with my sister (Mt. Dora/Sanford) while Erica attended her summer dance program with Dr. Suz (Orlando). We were all super pumped and it was great to be with our family. We made some great new friends and then our plans changed.
The second day of her intensive, Erica dislocated her knee cap. It went back in on its own so we thought she was ok. We returned to Gainesville with hopes of heading back to O-Town the next week and she was seen by her pediatrician who quickly sent us over to Ortho After Hours. That's when our best laid summer plans came to a screeching halt. Yep, the options were laid out for us about her type of injury...long story, short...it was surgery or PT. We took our chances with rehab. Things were going well and we went to visit Dr. Suz and her crew, who put on a grand show that we throughly enjoyed albeit bittersweet.
We went up to good ol' Sopchoppy for my 20th high school reunion. (Yes, insert your gasps here. I have been out of high school for 20 years!) We returned home and that next PT visit really changed things up for us. Erica's knee dislocated again! This time it did not go back and thank God for those amazing therapists because they got us through our crisis and on our way to Ortho After Hours again. We knew that we'd being seeing the surgeon for sure at this point. And we did, the very next morning at 8. I love Gainesville for many reasons and though many find it to be a big town...it's really rather small. Her surgeon had been a parent of one of my students several years ago. Ahhh, big sigh of relief. Plus he just so happens to be the best in the region!
We scheduled the surgery, got through it, started back to work and school and through many days of rehab have finally found some brighter days! And now, here we are in mid-October! Fall has arrived and those sweet summer plans seem like an eternity ago.
Well, here's to next summer, right?
Ah, so things don't always go as we plan but through all this I have been reminded that God has a bigger plan and likely a better plan than we do.
We have come to know some fantastic people through this experience and have learned so much about the knee. Yes, the knee is quite amazing. Both my kids love the clinic too. Shane asks tons of questions about all the equipment and who knows maybe they'll both be Physical Therapists when they are all grown up.
Erica is doing great. Although she isn't able to dance right now she visits her studio and her friends have been keeping up with her. She has joined a couple of clubs at school and has been able to pull the load of her Junior year even with all that she's been through. I am amazed by her strength and thankful she has such a brave spirit.
