After the recent storm knocked many of us off the power grid, I got to thinking. Work...all our chores, communications and our work has been made easier by electricity and technology but yet, we complain much more than I recall my grandparents ever fussing over their chores. We are quick tempered when calls or texts aren't instantly responded to and often quickly know when we've been excluded from a group, thanks to fb posts. Do our days go faster because we can actually breeze through many things that took previous generations a full day to work on? Are we less happy because we are more connected or are we really connected at all?
Now, I love posting my news and my nonsense on fb and seeing what my friends are doing. FB has connected me with loved ones far away and has been a way for me to reach out and help in a time of need in a friend's life but there are still days I'm bummed because I see that someone else has done something better that I was trying to achieve and they've done it faster. I'll be the first to admit if certain people don't quickly respond to my texts or calls that I get upset. And I, too, am at fault for missing a text or thinking I responsed when actually I haven't.
Today, I thought would be a good day to slow down and hand write a note to friend who recently lost a loved one. I hope that when the snail mail arrives they find that note as uplifting as I meant for it be. Sure it's so easy to send a text, an email or a fb message to check in but sometimes I think a good old fashioned hand written note is a good thing.
